🚘 Prolonged driving without following health principles is one of the causes of back pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Prolonged driving also impairs proper blood circulation and increases the chance of blood clots forming in the legs. Some important tips to follow while driving include:
- The driver's seat angle relative to the horizontal should be about 100 to 110 degrees.
- The distance from the driver's seat to the steering wheel should be standard. There is a simple test for this: sit in the seat and cross your hands over the wheel — if you don't have to stretch your arms or bend them excessively, the distance is appropriate.
- Your hands on the wheel should not be overly bent or overextended. The proper elbow angle in this position is more than 90 degrees.
- Some drivers position their seat too far from the wheel. This causes the driver to hunch forward, and this curvature leads to back and neck pain.
- While driving, avoid holding a fixed, rigid posture. Relax your body and occasionally loosen your grip on the wheel.
- While driving, and with due caution, occasionally stretch the muscles of your hands, legs, shoulders, and back.
- After every two to three hours of driving, be sure to stop and walk near your car for a few minutes.
- Using a standard lumbar cushion for the driver's seat, placed in the small of your back, is helpful.
