Nerve Conduction Study and Electromyography (EMG and NCV)

A nerve and muscle test (electrodiagnostic study) is a diagnostic exam used to assess how the body functions. The human body is an electricity generator, and the purpose of producing this electricity is to transmit messages between the brain and other organs. Nerves carry these messages in the form of electrical waves. When a nerve is not functioning properly, this transmission of messages and electrical waves becomes disrupted. There are methods that can record the intensity, speed, and other characteristics of the electrical waves traveling along a nerve. By studying these waves, a physician can obtain useful information about nerve conditions. This is called an electrodiagnostic test, or nerve conduction study, and it uses two methods:

1. Electromyography (EMG)
2. Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) Study
